Propositions: Individuation and Invirtuation Forthcoming in Australasian Journal of Philosophy

چکیده
The pressure to individuate propositions more finely than intensionally – that is hyperintensionally – has two distinct sources. One source is the philosophy of mind: one can believe a proposition without believing an intensionally equivalent proposition. The second source is metaphysics: there are intensionally equivalent propositions such that one proposition is true in virtue of the other but not vice-versa. I focus on what our theory of propositions should look like when it’s guided by metaphysical concerns about what is true in virtue of what. In this paper I articulate and defend a metaphysical theory of the individuation of propositions, according to which two propositions are identical just in case they occupy the same nodes in a network of invirtuation relations. Invirtuation is here taken to be a primitive relation of metaphysical explanation exemplified by propositions that, in conjunction with truth, defines the notion of true in virtue of. After formulating the theory, I compare it with a view that individuates propositions by cognitive equivalence, and then defend the theory from objections.

Singular Propositions in Two-Stage Theory
In traditional possible-worlds semantics the meaning, or intension, of an atomic empirical sentence is given as a proposition, whereby a proposition is modelled as a mapping from possible worlds to truth-values. Call such propositions ‘PWS (ie possible-worlds semantic) propositions.’ This notion of proposition, however, has been rightly found to be too coarse to handle propositional and notiona...
متن کاملA native proposal for the philosophy of history
Though philosophy of history like other fields of knowledge has its roots in eastern traditional knowledge, as an epistemological branch it appeared in West and then entered in East. Present states of knowledge in Islamic Iran, particularly with regard to the necessities and grounds of change in humanities, have prepared an opportunity to present a proposal in the field of philosophy of history...

We explore the outstanding question whether Conciliationism commits one to Uniqueness, and return a negative verdict. After setting out some preliminary matters (§1), we explain and criticize Kelly’s [2010] argument that Conciliationism commits one to Uniqueness (§2), thereby defeating his larger argument that Conciliationism deserves no dialectical special treatment. But this brings no comfort...
متن کاملWhat is an organism? An immunological answer.
The question, "What is an organism?," formerly considered as essential in biology, has now been increasingly replaced by a larger question, "What is a biological individual?" On the grounds that i) individuation is theory-dependent, and ii) physiology does not offer a theory, biologists and philosophers of biology have claimed that it is the theory of evolution by natural selection that tells u...
متن کاملConceptual Trends in the History of Systems Philosophy
This article charts the history of the concept of system in order to establish a set of conceptual trends in the philosophy of systems. Establishing the importance of the German Idealists, and especially Hegel, in this history, we then focus on the system of Leibniz since he marks a decisive turn toward the problem of individuation within the systematic, ontological immanence so important to He...
